Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn at Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. As a young girl, her carnival barker father passed away which left Ruth's mother with no choice but to be a cleaning lady and waitress in order to support her family. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's poorest tenement area. But she quit school in the span of two years in order to pursue an acting career. The path was difficult to pursue. Although she got a job at a theatre in New York posing as a woman for a magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that were offered to her. Her next job was as the "hat check" lady at a club before she gave up and returned to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a regular actor. The company paid her working during the day in the ushering department. She graduated with a diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
